(SALISBURY, NC) –The Learning Resource Center and Information Commons (LRC-IC) joins libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week April 14-20, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers. Libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. Often the hearts of their communities, campuses or schools, libraries are deeply committed to the places where their patrons live, work and study. Libraries are trusted places where everyone in the community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.

The LRC- IC is celebating National Library Week by hosting:

Let’s Mango. To highlight the new addition of the Mango Languages Learning System to the LRC-IC’s long list of online resources, each location will be giving out free Mango smoothies with a reusable mug. Stop by to see how learning a new language can be fun! Mango offers lessons that incorporate interactive tools and rich imagery that eliminates boredom and keeps you engaged.
We will also be giving away a Kindle, so drop by to register during the event. The drawing will be held at the end of National Library Week.
Let’s Mango at:

It provides funding for student assistance, institutional enhancement, faculty/staff incentive grants and new program development. In exchange for donations to the RCCC oundation, the LRC-IC will waive fines. Patrons will get $2 in fines waived for every $1.00 that they donate to the Foundation. Donations will be accepted at any Circulation Desk during National Library Week.

Feburary 18, 2013–The LRC-IC is pleased to announce that it now offers the Mango Languages online language-learning system to its patrons.

Mango is free for all library patrons, and offers a fast and convenient solution for our community’s increasing language-learning needs. Each lesson combines real life situations and audio from native speakers with simple, clear nstructions. The courses are presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that integrates components of vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and culture. Users learn actual conversation, breaking down complex conversational elements within an audio-visual framework that allows the user to draw important connections between pieces of information they have already learned.

Mango is available in two versions. One is Mango Complete, a 100-lesson course that is designed to provide a deep understanding of a language and its culture. It is available in nine foreign language and three ESL courses. The second is Mango Basic, which teaches everyday greetings, gratitudes, goodbyes and helpful phrases in a short period of time and is designed to appeal to a beginner in a new language. The courses, which require only two to five hours of time to complete, are currently available in 22 foreign languages and 15 English as a Second Language (ESL) courses.

We are thrilled to add our library to the growing list of libraries across the country who have added Mango to their resources. To learn more about Mango and get a preview of what the program has to offer, stop by the library and we will give you an introduction. You can access Mango via the library website at www.rccc.edu/lrc or you can also visit the resource directly at http://libraries.mangolanguages.com/rccc/start . Even better, if you have your library card and have access to the Internet, you can access the actual courses remotely from anywhere!

For more information, contact your local branch of the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College LRC-IC.

In response to users’ requests for leisure reading, the LRC-IC subscribes to the McNaughton Collection. Under this plan, the LRC-IC “leases” current books from its vendor and exchanges non-circulating books for new releases. Both fiction, including mysteries, sci-fi, and romance novels, and non-fiction titles are selected to satisfy the wide range of interests in the RCCC community.

Click here to see a list of our collection.

Checkout reviews on some of those titles by our Online Librarian, Charlie Royce…

U is for Undertow is Sue Grafton’s 21st book in her Alphabet mystery series. Kinsie Milhone is the detective and what I like best is she is just like the rest of us. Meaning that she lives her daily life but solves crimes since she is a private detective. In this novel she helps her client solve a kidnapping case that he remembers bits of from his childhood about 20 years earlier. If you like detective stories this is the book and hopefully the series for you.

House Rules by Jodi Picoult is another good book. It details the story of a boy with autism that is currently obsessed with murder mysteries. After the death of his social skills teacher he is arrested for her murder but the question is if he is guilty or innocent. Jodi Picoult writes novels about deep issues like this that will keep you intrigued until the end of the book. Another of hers is Handle with Care. It details the story of a disabled child whose mother sues the OBGYN for not informing her the daughter would be severely disabled. This book is definitely a page turner.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks details the story of woman fleeing from her abusive husband to a small beach town in North Carolina. Is she who she says she is and will her husband find her? What happens when she falls in love with someone else.

44 Charles Street by Danielle Steele tells the story of a woman who just bought and old house with her boyfriend right before they end up breaking up. To keep the house she takes in roommates who may end up changing her life forever. This story has many different elements and characters and is suitable for many different readers.
