Traditional Delivery Method

Sections that use the traditional delivery method meet face-to-face at one of the Rowan-Cabarrus campus locations.

YCAB/SRY (YMCA uses South Campus section numbers. YROW/JFHY (YMCA) uses North Campus section numbers. WVAC/LNDR (Waterworks) uses North Campus section numbers.

Web-Based Delivery Method

The primary delivery method for web-based sections is the traditional face-to-face method with an additional requirement that students have internet access as a supplemental part of the course. Fifty-one percent or more of the instruction will be face-to-face.

Hybrid Delivery Method

Hybrid classes combine online learning with face-to-face instruction. Ten percent to 49% of instruction for hybrid sections will be face-to-face. Face-to-face meeting dates are provided on the hybrid schedule. An H after the section number (e.g. 400H) indicates it will be broadcast via ITV.

Minimester Delivery Method

Minimesters provide the same amount of instruction as a traditional section; however, minimester sections meet half the time. Minimester meet for eight weeks in the Fall and Spring semesters and five weeks in the Summer term. Minimesters that begin at the beginning of the semester or term are referred to as 1st half minimesters. Minimesters that begin at the halfway point of the semester or term are referred to as 2nd half minimesters.

If a section is both a minimester and a non-traditional class, then the minimester section number is not used. Instead, the non-traditional delivery method section number is used with a “1″ or “2″ added to the end. Minimesters that occur at the beginning of the traditional semester or term end with a “1″. Minimesters that occur at the halfway point of the traditional semester or term end with a “2″. (e.g. The section number 4501 would be used for an internet class meeting during the first half of the semester. The section number 4152 would be used for an evening hybrid class on South Campus meeting the second half of the semester.)

For students enrolled in radiography (RAD), numerical grades below 77% (C) in radiography (RAD) and biology (BIO) courses are considered unsatisfactory attainment of course competency. In these instances, students will not be allowed to progress in the program.

Test Grades

During the course, if a student scores less than 77% (C) on any evaluation instrument, a mandatory counseling session will be scheduled with the instructor and/or other academic counselor. This session will emphasize strategies for success on future evaluations and will be geared to the retention of the student.

It is the responsibility of any student who decides to drop this course to officially withdraw from the course to avoid a grade of F. Student may be administratively withdrawn as it becomes evident that they cannot meet course objectives due to lack of attendance.

Curriculum Progression

Students who achieve a minimum of 77% (C) overall competency for each radiography (RAD) course will be eligible to progress in the radiography program. In addition, for radiography (RAD) courses which are comprised of both a class and laboratory component, a minimum of 77%(C) must be achieved in both class and laboratory components in order to progress in the radiography (RAD) curriculum. Numerical grades below 77% (C) in radiography (RAD) courses are considered unsatisfactory attainment of course competencies and will result in termination from the program.

Course Final Exams

Students who achieve a minimum of 77% (C) or higher on each radiography (RAD) course comprehensive final exam will earn a course grade calculated using all evaluative assessments and the comprehensive final exam per the course syllabus. Progression in the curriculum will continue as designed. However, students who make less that 77% (C) on any RAD course comprehensive final exam will receive the grade earned, but cannot progress in the radiography curriculum.

Nursing Selective Admission Process

There will be 30 students selected for the Practical Nursing program. The Associate Degree Nursing program has an enrollment capacity for 60 students. Admission into the nursing programs is competitive and based on a selective point system process. The Nursing Admission Test is a multiple choice test that evaluates the basic reading, math, writing and science skills for students seeking entry into a nursing program. Applicants are required to meet both the score requirements for the Adjusted Individual and Reading scores. Points will be awarded for both of these cut score requirements. Specific cut scores will be determined annually by the nursing programs based on the national norm and program attrition data. Additional points will be awarded to applicants who score in the advanced or exemplary category for Reading. Applicants who have met the admission test score requirements will be further evaluated on the point system criteria. Applicants who do not meet the ADN required cut score will be further evaluated for the PN cut score at the conclusion of admission decisions. Applicants must take the current admission nursing test. Only current test scores will be used to rank the applicants. High school students pursuing admission to the Nursing programs are encouraged to take advantage of the high school Allied Health while still in high school to remain competitive in the admission process.

The point system is an objective means for evaluating nursing applicants. Fifty percent (50%) of an applicant’s total points will come from the nursing admission test. Fifty percent (50%) of total points will come from the following:

Related high school and/or college classes completed prior to Point System Evaluation,

Post-secondary degrees or diploma,

Work experience, and

County of residence.

Nursing applicants will be ranked based upon points earned, and the students with the highest number of points will be selected. If two or more students have the identical point count total, the reading score will be the deciding factor. If further validation is needed, math scores will be utilized.

The director of nursing education will communicate the faculty’s decision to the Admission Committee.

Legal Requirement for Nurse Licensure

Students enrolled in the RCCC Nursing program(s) complete an application for licensure as a registered nurse or practical nurse by examination. The application for the examination in North Carolina contains a question as to whether or not the applicant has ever been convicted on a misdemeanor or felony excluding minor traffic violations. If the answer is “yes,” the applicant is asked to provide an explanation. This question is asked because of the legal requirements for becoming registered as a nurse in North Carolina. Similar requirements exist in other states. Applications for initial licensure in North Carolina must have a federal criminal background check.

The Nursing Practice Act, Article 9, Chapter 90 (90-171.37) In accordance with the provisions of Chapter 150B of the General Statutes, the North Carolina Board of Nursing shall have the power and authority to deny any application for licensure, if the Board determines that the applicant

has given false information or has withheld material information from the Board in procuring or attempting to procure a license to practice nursing;

has been convicted of or pleaded guilty or nolo contendere to any crime which indicates that the nurse is unfit or incompetent to practice nursing or that the nurse has deceived or defrauded the public;

has a mental or physical disability or used any drug to a degree that interferes with his or her fitness to practice nursing;

engages in conduct that endangers the public health;

is unfit or incompetent to practice nursing by reason of deliberate or negligent acts or omissions regardless of whether actual injury to the patient is established;

engages in conduct that deceives, defrauds, or harms the public in the course of professional activities or services; or

has willfully violated any provision of the Article or of regulations enacted by the Board.

If a student has any question about his/her eligibility to take the licensing examination, he/she may wish to confer with an attorney or the N.C. Board of Nursing. The RCCC Nursing faculty will provide upon request information regarding resources for further information relative to the legal requirements for licensure.

Evaluation of Physical and Emotional Health Based on Program Technical Standards

Physical Health

Physical health is defined as being able to perform fine and gross motor skills, being able to perform normal weight-bearing activities, and free of a communicable disease.

Assessment of the student’s physical health is made with the use of information from the physical examination, performed by the applicant’s physician, and laboratory tests. Pre-entrance tests/immunizations are required. Validation of immunizations is required by the student’s healthcare provider. If a physical condition threatens to prevent or prevents satisfactory classroom or clinical performance, the individual in question is counseled and referred to an appropriate professional at the individual’s expense. The recommendation of the professional is utilized in advising the individual with regard to continued enrollment in the program. A person may be denied admission or continued enrollment in the program if the physical problem conflicts with safety essential to nursing practice and does not respond to appropriate treatment within a reasonable period of time.

In the case of a qualified individual with a documented disability, appropriate and reasonable accommodations will be made unless to do so would fundamentally alter the essential training elements, cause undue hardship, or produce a direct threat to the safety of the patient or student.

Emotional Health

Emotional health is defined as reacting appropriately to stressful situations, understanding one’s own ability to cope with stressful situations, and behaving appropriately within the current environment.

Assessment of emotional health of applicants is made through the use of physical examinations, and current psychological evaluations, if necessary, from qualified professionals.
