COMPASS Test-Taking Tips

  • Get a good night’s rest and eat something prior to the session.  Food and drinks are not permitted in the session.
  •  Arrive at least five minutes early so that you will be relaxed when the session begins.
  • Enter the session with a positive attitude.  Remember, you cannot fail.
  • Take your time and do not rush.  Each of the individual assessments is not timed.
  • If you are not comfortable using a computer mouse, you may choose to reivew the mouse instructions and practice prior to the start of the assessment.
  • Read the directions for each section carefully.  If you are not clear on the directions, re-read them or ask the testing coordinator for assistance.
  • Read each question carefully to make sure you understand what it’s asking.
  • Try and answer the question in your head before choosing an answer.
  • If you are not sure of an answer, eliminate as many choices as you can.
  • On the English and Mathematics portions of the assessment, put your answers back into the question to see if your answer makes sense.
  • On the Reading Comprehension portion, read the passage as many times as you need.
  • You will be provided a calculator (Texas Instruments TS-30 Xa calculator) and will be able to access one on the computer for the Mathematics portion of assessment:  Numerical Skills / Pre-Algebra Assessment and Algebra Placement test.  Scrap paper and pencil will also be provided.
  • You will not be able to go back to previous questions, so make sure you are satisfied with the answers you choose before moving on to the next question/section.
