ECOprint is a print management system that provides a secure, managed, eco-friendly printing environment for everyone at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
- Reduce waste up to 80%.
- Decrease print volume.
- Encourage students, faculty, and staff to make informed responsible printing and copying decisions.
Print jobs can be submitted to a secure queue where they will be held, up to 48 hours, until their owner releases them from the print device or release station. Documents can be retrieved from a secure queue by swiping your Rowan-Cabarrus ID card or by manually entering your Rowan-Cabarrus network username and password.
ECOPrint gives you the ability to release a document at ECOprint enabled devices in the public areas such as the Learning Resource Centers (LRC) and Information Commons (IC).
What changes will I see?
When printing in classrooms students should experience very little to no change in the way they print. However, using a secure queue will deviate from the standard method of printing. Once a print job is submitted to a secure queue students must authenticate to receive their printouts by using their Rowan-Cabarrus ID card or by manually entering your Rowan-Cabarrus network username and password.
When we will begin using it?
The project will be executed in three phases for Rowan-Cabarrus students. Phase I is intended to raise awareness of ECOprint’s future debut and is also the pilot. We are currently testing ECOprint in a small controlled environment before fully implementing the system college wide. This will allow Information Technology Services (ITS) to transition classroom and lab areas to the ECOprint system without interrupting current printing services. Phase II will introduce Informed Print which will guide everyone on how to make responsible printing choices. Students will receive a printing quota each semester; the amount of the quota is based on the technology fee students pay each semester. During this phase, printing and copying costs will not be applied to the quota. Phase III begins August 19, 2013 and is the full implementation of ECOprint. During this phase printing and copying costs will be applied to the student quota.
How does it work?
There are two types of print queues available with ECOprint, held and direct. A held queue uses a feature called Secure Release where a direct queue will bypass the Secure Release feature and immediately produce a print out. Print jobs submitted to a secure queue are held, up to 48 hours, until their owners release them from the print device or release station. Classrooms utilize direct printing as the default print method, enabling students to retrieve their document(s) immediately. Secure printing is also available from classroom computers and thin clients. Secure ECOprint enabled devices are located in the public areas such as the Information Commons (IC), Student Centers and Learning Resource Centers (LRC).
