Basic Narcotics Investigations

Course Description: This Monday through Friday, 50-hour course is designed for newly assigned or soon-to-be assigned narcotics investigators, as well as officers pursuing a career path in narcotics investigation. Topics include NC drug law, surveillance, operational and case planning, undercover work, informant selection and management, and search warrant preparation. Instruction is provided by current narcotics agents and supervisors from state and local agencies. Students will engage in real-time practical exercises each day and must be prepared for long, demanding days. Participants will conduct a full investigation from initiation to final presentation, including surveillance, controlled or undercover purchases, informant management, warrant preparation, arrest planning, and case presentation. Recommended equipment includes surveillance gear, trackers, cameras, wires, and (optional) unmarked vehicles. This is a hands-on course requiring real-time decision-making.
