Course Description: This class is a combined multi-media presentation and interactive workshop involving the use of real-life case studies, film, and television as examples to aid in the understanding of how to apply the Fourth Amendment to both basic and highly complex fact patterns. Designed to serve as a thorough tutorial for all law enforcement
personnel, students will learn the legal standards and practical considerations associated with dozens of forms of searches. Additionally, students will learn how to more effectively write a search warrant from the ground-up, including how to draft their biography in a persuasive fashion, proper descriptions of the premises to be
searched, and expansive framing of the property to be seized. Perhaps most importantly, the class explores how to manufacture probable cause in difficult cases where at first glance there does not appear to be enough evidence to justify the issuance of a warrant.
