One Hundred Percent of Students Pass Program Tests

Law Enforcement and HR Students Recognized for Outstanding Achievements

SALISBURY, N.C. — Rowan-Cabarrus Community College proudly recognizes two entire groups of students who passed their respective recognized industry-wide exams.

Graduates of the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program and the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) designation had no need for the program re-test options because the whole set of graduates were conferred on the first try.

“This does not happen often across the state and we are very proud of our students,” said President Carol S. Spalding, Ed.D. “Rowan-Cabarrus Community College faculty and staff work hard to instill a commitment to excellence in our students. This is how I know that commitment is truly worth it.”

RCCC’s BLET program is designed to give students the essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with a private enterprise. General subjects include criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcohol beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.

“It is so rewarding to have all of these students pass on the first try,” said Spencer Rummage, Jr., Director of Law Enforcement Training. “Many of our instructors are former and current law enforcement officers who bring the added value of their actual on-the-job experiences which enhances their ability to train our students.”

The BLET graduates have passed the comprehensive state examination and are now eligible to be sworn in as entry-level law enforcement officers in North Carolina. The graduates are:

  • Cabarrus County Sherriff’s Office: Jessie Gatling, Robert Harkey, Bryant Redmond, Shane Whitley, Gerald Williams;
  • Concord Police Department: Mitchell Burris, Dale Castor, Walter Fink, Tommy Harvey, Fernando Sanchez, Shawn Visor;
  • Huntersville Police Department: Vance McGhee;
  • Matthews Police Department: Kevin Fontana;
  • Rowan County Sherriff’s Office: Robyn Cosgriff, Joshua Krout, Randy Rigsby; and
  • Stallings Police Department: Zackary Morton.

Every year the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), recognizes those schools that made a tremendous effort towards teaching courses in human resource management. This year, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College was awarded a certificate of recognition from SHRM for achieving a 100% pass rate on the SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) December 2010-January 2011 exam window.

“Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s use of the SHRM Learning System materials, coupled with the interactive classroom environment, was instrumental in preparing me to successfully complete the SPHR exam,” said Susan Nunn who works for the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services.

The awardees include:

  • China Grove: Susan Nunn;and
  • Kannapolis: Christine Graves; and
  • Monroe: Joan Little; and
  • Salisbury: Sabrina Knouse, June Pryor.

“These two groups of students are indicative of the breadth of programs and opportunities that Rowan-Cabarrus has available. I only hope that more residents of Rowan and Cabarrus counties will join the ranks of these graduates and better our community,” said Spalding.
