JEFFERY DAVID COX, SR., 1983 ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING GRADUATE, RECEIVES THE “2012 YITZHAK RABIN PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD”
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Rowan-Cabarrus Community College alumnus, Jeffery David Cox, Sr., was recently awarded the prestigious “2012 Yitzhak Rabin Public Service Award” from the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE).
J. David Cox is the National Secretary-Treasurer American Federation of Government Employees, AFL-CIO, and has over 20 years of experience as a nurse for the Veterans’ Administration. Cox is also a graduate of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and a former member of its Board of Trustees and past President of the Student Government Association.
Cox was selected to receive the prestigious 2012 Yizhak Rabin Public Service Award, presented by the American Friends of the Yitzhak Rabin Center (AFYRC), honoring those whose work reflects the legacy of the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
“I was honored to be at David’s award ceremony – the entire crowd was engaged by him,” said Dr. Carol. S. Spalding. “David speaks so positively about his experience at Rowan-Cabarrus. I can’t wait for you all to meet him soon!”
J. David Cox is a nationally recognized labor leader and has been appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the Federal Salary Council and the Federal Prevailing Wage Council; is Vice President of the North Carolina State AFL-CIO, a position he has held since 1993; and a member of the AFL-CIO’s National Secretary-Treasurers’ Group.
At the college’s May 21 Board of Trustees meeting, board members passed a congratulatory resolution in his honor.
“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – our graduates go on to do great things,” said Carl M. Short, Chair of the Rowan-Cabarrus Board of Trustees. “I continue to be impressed by the work they do. The Board of Trustees is so proud of David for his outstanding commitment to our nation’s veterans and their health care.”
J. David Cox began his private sector career in health care in 1970 as a food service worker and later acquired education and certification as a nursing assistant, a licensed practical nurse, and a registered nurse at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College He began his formal career with the VA and was employed by that organization until September 2006 when he assumed his current position as Secretary-Treasurer of the AFGE.
J. David Cox is a native of North Carolina, and also attended Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC.
