Reports:

SGA President’s Report:

Strategic Plan: Gaye McConnell, Vice President of Student Services, and Tina Haynes, Chief Officer in Human Resources and Organizational Effectiveness, appreciate student input for the strategic plan offered by students at previous SGA meeting last semester. President Anthony Rossi reviewed slides of pictures of current construction occurring on both north and south campus. This included projected pictures of some of the projects once they reach completion.

Mobile App: Anthony Rossi explained that a new mobile app named Beacon will launch on Friday, January 16. This app will have the same capabilities as WebAdvisor, but will be accessible on mobile phones. Natasha Lipscomb, Senior Advisor, explained that the app will be available in the Google Play Store. Instructions will be available on the RCCC website. Please report any problems with the new app to SGA President, Anthony Rossi at sgapres@rccc.edu.

Parliamentarian, Daran Knox, Report:

Constitution Restructuring: Parliamentarian Daran Knox discussed possible changes to the SGA Constitution. The section that may be restructured concerns club officers also being officers in SGA. Daran Knox performed some research by contacting some other community colleges across North Carolina to learn about their policies and how they handle similar issues in their schools. Any changes made to the SGA constitution will be effective for the 2015-2016 school year. The purpose of this restructuring is so that neither the club nor SGA suffer due to student leaders being overextended. Those choosing to serve in SGA must make SGA their priority. Daran urged all club senators to discuss these issues with their clubs at their next meeting and to return to the February meeting with ideas. He also directed them as to where to find the SGA Constitution and to read through it to learn more about how the constitution is currently structured. Suggestions will be discussed at the February SGA meeting, and will be voted on in March.

Unfinished Business:

Memorial Site/Memorial Scholarship:

After some research, it has been determined that the cost of the memorial site would total about $4500 to include a site on both north and south campus. Research on a scholarship led to the determination that a $1500 scholarship for three consecutive years would be a valid option. The total cost of this would also equal $4500. We need to set an amount that we will not exceed and will have to put this in the form of a motion.

Point of information, David Lore: Does the $4500 for the memorial site option include maintenance costs? Anthony Rossi stated that this would be included in this amount.

Point of information, Angela Lore: What would be the requirements or qualifications for students to get the scholarship that is being discussed? Anthony Rossi stated that this issue has not been addressed yet and that it would have to be determined at a later date.

Point of information, Enoch Walker: Can you state the pros and cons of each of the options? Anthony Rossi stated that he must remain unbiased in this matter. However, the scholarship would probably run more smoothly as we would simply donate the money. For the memorial site, there would probably be more labor involved.

Point of information, David Lore: Would future SGAs be able to continue this scholarship after the three years were over by adding more money to the fund? Anthony Rossi stated that the next tier of scholarship is for a $15,000 scholarship and that those funds are not in the budget. The 3-year block scholarship is the only viable option.

Point of information, Enoch Walker: Is there a place where more information is available about these options? Anthony Rossi stated that he would send out more information in about a week. Make sure that your e-mail is updated and clear on the sign-in sheet.

New Business:

Paws for Soldier Donation Request:

Anthony Rossi explained that Paws for Soldiers has requested a donation from the RCCC SGA. He explained that veterans suffering from PTSD or other stresses are given a dog as a companion. One of our students, Gary Eury, is part of this program and brings his service dog with him to campus. Representatives from Paws for Soldiers was scheduled to speak to us at the meeting but did not attend. we will reschedule this for a later time. We may possibly be able to donate the cost of a vest for a dog in the approximate amount of $60. We will discuss further if and when they come for a presentation.

Relay for Life:

Every year the SGA uses Krispy Kreme donuts as a fundraiser for Relay for Life. This has been successful in previous years, and the SGA is usually able to raise about $1000 each year.

Point of information, Shawn Henderson: Have you considered selling the buy one-get one free Krispy Kreme cards or have we only used the boxes of donuts? These seem to work very well as fundraisers because they do not expire. Has this ever been done, and can it be considered? Anthony Rossi stated that it was not done last year and it is definitely considerable. This matter must be dealt with and voted on at this meeting, because we plan this fundraiser to coincide with financial aid refunds.

Motion: I, Shawn Henderson, move to sell Krispy Kreme donuts and / or buy one get one free cards to raise money for Relay for Life with a fund raising goal of $1,000. David Lore seconded the motion. The motion was voted on and passed.
