SGA President’s Report-Anthony Rossi

Board of Trustees Meeting

There were scholarships announced for the State Employees Credit Union Scholarship. The two candidates that were selected were Dorothy Combs and Jeremy Carter. We now have a new program for physical therapy and the director for this program is Lisa Zuber. The finance committee chair Cindy Mynatt spoke of a motion that was put forth to support the North Carolina Community College 2015-2017 budgets. This motion addresses closing the salary gap for teachers, the technology gap, and the skills gap in community colleges. This budget was adopted.

Red Cross Blood Drive

During the blood drive on February 11, we were able to collect 48 units at north campus and 38 units on south campus.

Relay for Life

The dates for the doughnut sale for the Relay for Life fundraiser had to be postponed due to inclement weather conditions. South campus has been rescheduled for today, March 3, from 8:00 am—1:00 pm, and then from 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm. North campus sale date has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 4, from 8:00 am—1:00 pm, and then from 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm. If you would like to help with the doughnut sale, please contact Patty Scott, Administrative Assistant in Student Life, or Anthony Rossi, SGA President.

Alternative Spring Break

Alternative Spring Break will take place on Tuesday, March 10. We will start in Rowan County at Rowan Helping Ministries. This is a well-recognized resource for Rowan County residents. We have worked with them in the past and they have been very grateful. We will help at this site from 8:30 am—11:00 am. We will then take on a project in Cabarrus County for Cooperative Christian Ministries from 1:00 pm—4:00 pm. There are limited spots available, if you would like to participate, please contact Barb Meidl.

Constitution Restructuring Committee

This committee was formed to discuss the possible SGA Constitution revisions that have been discussed during the last few meetings. We met last Friday and discussed possible routes for these changes. We will discuss our ideas during the New Business portion of this meeting.

Central Division Meeting

There are two large N4CSGA conferences each year—one in the spring and one in the fall. Before each of these conferences, there is a smaller division meeting where we are able to meet with other schools in our division to form motions that we would like to bring forth at the state level. During this meeting, we adopted the budget priorities that I discussed earlier.

Allison Scott- Assistant Director of Financial Aid- $ALT

She introduced a new program that will be implemented across the campuses called $ALT. Rowan-Cabarrus Community College has partnered with the American Student assistance to help students and alumni to become more financially literate during college and beyond. $ALT is totally free. The program offers something for everyone—budgeting, organizing and paying for student debt, scholarships and internships, and other financial skills. You can visit the website at www.saltmoney.org/rccc to register. If you have any questions, feel free to stop by financial aid office on north or south campus and they will be happy to help you.

Gary Eury- Paws for Soldiers

Gary Eury is a recipient and volunteer for a local program, Paws for Soldiers, that works to provide service dogs for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, or physical injuries received in combat. He introduced his service dog, Briggs, to the meeting attendees. Mr. Eury asked the SGA to consider making a donation to help cover the cost of a vest or two. He also offered information about how individuals can make donations on the organization’s website at www.paws4soldiers.com. The cost of a vest is approximately $70 each and come from Elite Canine.

Secretary/Treasurer Report- Angela Lore

Angela Lore gave an update on the Excellence in Teaching Award Committee progress. We have now moved into Phase Two. There were only four part time candidates in the beginning of the competition, therefore all four candidates were selected. For the full time candidates, the fifth and sixth place candidates were tied and the committee decided to allow six candidates to continue to Phase Two. All instructors that have been selected to continue into Phase Two were notified on February 20. These candidates had one week to submit some of their Phase Two documents. By February 27, they had to submit their spring class schedules so that their classroom video could be recorded. They also had to arrange to have their professional photo taken by Ken Green, the photographer at RCCC. There was a slight extension of this deadline from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on February 27 due to the inclement weather. The other parts of Phase Two include providing two one-page letters of recommendation from their supervisors or other members of administration and a teaching portfolio. These materials are due by March 23. Student polling will be held on March 16-27. E-mails will be sent out with information concerning voting. Winners will be announced April 17.

Applications for Leadership Positions

Applications are currently being accepted for the 2015-2016 academic year for SGA officers and Ambassadors. The deadline for applications is March 31, 2015.

Paws 4 Soldiers

Tereysha Robles, Public Information Officer moved to donate two vests, not to exceed $150 to the Paws 4 Soldiers organization on behalf of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Student Life. Angel Hackworth seconded the motion. David Lore inquired where the funds come from for this donation. Anthony Rossi stated that this comes from the Special Projects section of the Student Life budget. The motion was voted on and passed.

Constitution Restructuring

The constitution restructuring committee met last Friday, February 27 to discuss possible changes to the SGA constitution. The following motion was proposed:

The Constitution Committee moves to revise the student government constitution to read as follows:

A student must be a club member for a semester prior to holding an officer position in the Student Government Association.

The second revision; If you have been elected the post as a club officer, you cannot relinquish that position to accept a Student Government officer position.

The third revision; If you hold the office of a student club presidency, you cannot take the role of Vice President or President in the Student Government Association for that same academic school year.

The fourth revision; The Student Government Association Vice President and President must have had a semester prior in the Student Government Association as an executive officer or academic senator.

David Lore seconded the motion.

Point of Information-Brian Cole: He asked if the intention is that someone has to serve as an officer of a club before running for an SGA officer position. Anthony Rossi stated that in order to run for an officer position, you must have been a member of a club, not an officer. In order to run for Vice President or President, you must have been an officer or academic senator in SGA.

Point of Information-Senior Advisor, Natasha Lipscomb: When do you propose this to take affect? Anthony Rossi stated that this would take affect for the next academic school year. Senior Advisor Lipscomb also inquired if this means that the 2015-2016 SGA officers are currently those that are in this meeting. Anthony Rossi stated that this would only be true of the Vice President and President position.

A change was made to the fourth revision to read as follows:

The fourth revision; The Student Government Association Vice President and President must have had a semester prior in the Student Government Association as an executive officer, academic senator, or club senator.

Effective 2015-2016 academic school year.

The revisions were voted on and passed by majority vote.
