SACS Visit:

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) On-Site Committee has completed their visit on September 24th, and I’m excited to share that we had a very good report and anticipate our official notice of reaccreditation in June of 2016.

  •  During the SACS visit we had several students that participated in the SACS panel, they were asked questions regarding the SEEK, QUP and personal experience with the resources that were in question.

I wanted to let you know that there was a shooting at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College. 9 students and 1 instructor was killed during this travesty. We request that everyone please use the card stock that we have available to make sympathy cards that we will be sending off to the community college to send our respects and condolences. We will be doing this for the next two weeks at the SGA offices on North and South.

Public Information Officer South Campus-Roa Y Saleh

On September 19, 2015 our SGA officers had the opportunity to attend the N4CSGA Central division meeting (the North Carolina Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association) at South Piedmont community college. There are two central division meetings held each year prior to the larger state business meeting. At the state level, N4CSGA is divided into east, west, and central divisions. During these meetings, our SGA officers had the opportunity to interact with officers from different community colleges to form motions in order to bring to the state business meeting. Our SGA officers realized the importance of Roberts’s rules and Student Government. They met their N4CSGA central Division representative Taylor Coble and attended leadership workshops. Each officer had the opportunity to learn more about their roles and how they can become effective leaders within their colleges while being the voice of students. As a PIO on south campus, I attended the “What Matters the Most” workshop. From this workshop I have gained critical time management techniques and realized the importance of planning ahead by putting top priorities first. In conclusion, time is like money, where it also has to be managed.

Festival of Trees-Location Decision

We have been doing Festival of Trees for the past 5 years with the proceeds going to a local charity. The tree will be place in a different location after the event. You will have three locations that we will be choosing from for the festival of trees. This will need to get voted on.

  •  Department of Social Services
  •  Rowan Helping Ministries
  •  YMCA

Erica Lettice asked for clarification as to which YMCA location the tree would be placed at. Natasha Lipscomb explained that the location was the J.F. Hurley YMCA in Salisbury, NC.

The location was voted on and passed to place the tree at the Hurley YMCA. There were 12 votes in favor of the YMCA, 2 votes in favor of Department of Social Services, and 7 votes for Rowan Helping Ministries.

Cosmetology

Last month we participated in: Hispanic Heritage Day, September 23 and Sole Hope, October 1. We are preparing for our own Sole Hope Event which will be in late October, voting on our parade theme and which 2 parades to attend, planning student App Event October 30, planning our Community Service Event (through Dec), advertising at the November Blood Drive. Our next meeting will be October 20. Elected Amber Yost (PR), Shena Smothers (PR), Delany Williams (S).

Dental Assisting

Discussed community project, campus project, plans for parades. Also discussed club t-shirts. Community project: September 30 at Koontz Elementary. Possible campus project ideas: plant a tree, plant flowers in pots in front of student center. New member-Hannah informed the school about lack of seating in the student center during lunch due to early college students spreading out and taking up the available tables. Sitting with the RCEC students is not feasible, as they are very young and loud which makes it hard for us to communicate as we need to.

Health and Fitness Club

Met on October 5, 2015, chose our remaining officers and figured out our by-laws. We also figured out our community service project and campus project. Will be meeting with the advisors to set budget on October 6, 2015.

Our second table will be to inform the college and community on the stigma of Mental Illness and provide resources from our college and community that are available in Rowan and Cabarrus counties. We also discussed our duties as officers for our induction ceremony on October 23.  We held events on campus to recruit new members for PTK awareness Week (September 14 – September 18) on North and South Campuses.

Prism

We are still working on delegating time for meetings. As club president, I want to do everything by myself because that is my nature. As a club, I feel Prism needs to meet with SGA so they know the Administration (Shemeda and Barb) because there is tension between Ali and myself at the moment. As a leader I feel we need to have a stronger leadership system in place to work on the delegation of duties to all officers. With tension between some of us, I feel this is our top priority.

Racing Club

Working on our on and off campus service project. And determining the timeline for our club project. Election of officers.
