N4CSGA Conference Report-Bobby Ingram

On April 1-3, SGA officers had the opportunity to attend the N4CSGA spring conference. There were many leadership workshops and three business meetings. The first one was called “Understanding International Students” where they talked about how students that come from different countries have to overcome so much to get where they want to be. They usually don’t know how our system works plus they struggle to learn our language. They have to fight to get permanent residence and they have to deal with the fact that they can be sent back to their country if they are undocumented. This workshop made me become even more proud of RCCC because of all the diversity on our campus. Within the three meetings there were many motions presented. One of the motions that passed was to inform community college students about House Bill 2.

Our SGA officer Roa Salah won the Daryl Mitchell Award for student excellence.

Our advisor Barb Meidl was selected by the N4CSGA Student Body to be an advisor to the Executive Board of the N4CSGA.

This concludes my report.

Unfinished Business:

Tabled motion: Proposal to adjust the number of active members required for Tier 1 of Travel Grant

Original motion: I, Brittany Martin, make a motion to move to change the number of members for the tier 1 from 40 to 35 active members and leave the lower tiers the same. Seconded by Emily Faust.

  • A new motion was made: I, Brittany Martin, make a motion to retract my previous motion to change Tier 1 Travel Grant membership requirements. The motion was seconded by Ryan Helm.
  • Natasha Lipscomb asked if the motion was to kill the original motion to make a new one or to just kill the original completely.
  • Brittany Martin responded to kill the original completely.
  • Enoch Walker asked if they were voting on the original motion or the new on.
  • Tereysha Robles responded that the vote will be on the new motion.

The motion was voted on and passed. There were 18 votes in favor, 3 votes against, and 1 abstentions.

New Business:

Report from CFO/VP of Business & Finance, Janet Spriggs regarding 2016-2017 Student Fees.

Current Structure:

  • Campus Access Fee: $20
  • Student Activity Fee: $32 (fall and spring), $13 (summer)
  • Technology Fee: $25.00 per semester (7+ credit hrs), $12.50 per semester (1-6 credit hrs).
  • Graduation Fee: $5

They would like to raise the fees to the following:

  • Campus Access Fee: $20
  • Student Activity Fee: $34 (fall and spring), $15 (summer) (Which includes the insurance for students)
  • Technology Fee: $18 per semester (1-6 credit hrs), $36.00 per semester (7+ credit hrs).
  • Graduation Fee: $7
    • Ryan Helm asked if the technology fee had anything to do with e-books and students not wanting to use them.
    • Janet Spriggs responded that it did not have anything to do with the e-books.
    • Nicolann Miller asked if the Insurance fee could be put under its own heading.
    • Janet Spriggs responded that the state regulations want it placed under the Student Activity heading.
    • Nicolann Miller asked why they are looking at an increase of all fees especially Technology with the decrease in enrollment.
    • Janet Spriggs replied that the college is anticipating the cost within the next 2-5 years and that technology needs to be updated regardless of the number of students.  The technology fee is used for the info structure of the entire college network (i.e. wiring, wireless capabilities, speed upgrades, online security, etc.)
    • Ryan Helm asked if the increase was based upon current enrollment or future enrollment.
    • Janet Spriggs responded that it used a predicted enrollment based upon the summer enrollment increase from the prior year.
    • Charles White asked if there was an estimate they were trying to reach in revenues from the fees.
    • Janet Spriggs responded that yes, they were looking at the revenue using the estimate cost of infrastructure & technology, estimated enrollment, and usage fee to cover.
    •  Nicolann Miller stated that the technology fees would be almost doubled because some classes have their own specific technology fee.
    • Janet Spriggs informed us that those fees have been looked at also and some of them have been reduced.

A motion was made and stated: I, Erica Lettice, make a motion for the base fees not to exceed $97.00 total which include; Access, Student Activity, Technology, and Graduation; which is an increase of $15.00. It was seconded by Bobby Ingram.  The motion was voted on and passed. There were 13 votes in favor, 5 votes against, and 1 abstention.

Resolution of Support for campus Veteran’s Center from Gary Eury (Veteran’s Club President)

The Veteran’s Club of RCCC would like to have a room set aside on campus for the use of veterans to receive support, financial help, along with a place to assist in the adjustment of returning to civilian life on a whole.

  • Emily Faust asked what direction they were looking to take this beyond the room.
  • Gary Eury responded that the Vets would be able to gain information regarding benefits, questions answered, or just someplace to go if they needed a quiet space to regroup.  Katie Herring (Financial Aid counselor who deals with the VA benefits) would be available to answer questions.
  • Natasha Lipscomb stated that the room request needed to be changed from a specific room number to a room decided upon by the college.
  • A motion was voted on and passed for the student body to support and send forth the resolution pending the following revisions:
    • Move the SGA support statement to the bottom (if adopted by the student senate)
    • Remove the college logo
    • Include more facts about RCCC college specific veteran population
    • Remove the specific location on campus

There were 22 votes in favor, 2 votes against, and 0 abstentions.

Club Reports:

AHR Chiller

Senator and Advisors attended the March Monthly SGA Business Meeting in the CBTC Distance Learning Center on Tuesday, 01 March. Chillers Club Executive committee met on Tuesday, 01 March for their monthly meeting to review upcoming items and set schedule for student meetings. Chillers Club had no March Lottery events scheduled. Chillers Club students have continued to work on part of their Community Service Project. The RCCC AHR Program and Cooperative Christian Ministries (CCM) have entered into a partnership whereas CCM will deliver low income shelters, homes, and some light commercial appliances to AHR. Our students will diagnose the problems with the appliances and report to CCM what parts are needed to repair them. CCM will provide the parts and AHR will repair and op-test the appliances. CCM will pick-up and deliver more. It is great training for our students and a low cost repair for CM. The second part of our Community Service Project will be completed on April 16th. Chillers Club student meetings were held during the week of 18 March through 24 March. Students voted on various items such as fundraising ideas and both community and campus service projects to do in March and April. Chillers Club members voted to pay for the SkillsUSA student meals that will be traveling to the National SkillsUSA conference the last week of June, up to a total of 5 students. The individual student amount and the total amount has not been determined as of yet. The exact amount will be known after April 21 as that is the date of the NC SkillsUSA conference and we will know then who, from RCC, is going to Nationals. Chillers Club senator, Larry Newcomb, is the Chairperson for the CBTC Art Project Committee. He will oversee and help with determining how this art project will be arranged and provide details on the committee’s findings.

Automotive/Skills USA

Skills Automotive is still moving along at a steady pace. We have just completed our Pizza Hut fundraiser making a good amount of funds for the club. We are now, as of this time, looking forward to the skills competition.

CKEC (Cabarrus/Kannapolis Early College) –

My Club is currently working on elections. We are preparing the ballots for those wishing to uphold a position. We are also opening the floor for speeches from those running. We are also working on our annual Luau along with a yard sale fundraiser we are holding on April 23rd.

Cosmetology

The cosmetology club went to a local middle school to do hair & make-up for a play they were doing. The advanced students will be taking final exams this month. We wish them all the best! We are also collecting change for Relay4Life and will be going to help with donations of hair at Relay event.

L.I.F.T.

Greetings from L.I.F.T. (Living in Faith Today). We’re thankful to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for all he’s given us all. So far we had our first meeting January 21 and our second meeting February 9th. We were blessed to be able to complete the Act of Kindness for February and March. Our third meeting was March 15th. The meetings have gone well. We were blessed to partner with PBL for the Gospel Concert on March 17th. We had a blast ministering and serving in Christ’s name. If the lord wills, we plan to have our next meeting April 12th. We’re also excited and planning to help out with Spring Fling on April 9th. We were thankful Bible study has gone well Wed/Thurs 12-1 in South

M.I.S.T.E.R.

Mister will be traveling to Washington D.C. next Thursday (4/14/16). We will return Sunday (4/17/16). We also will be attending Spring Fling on South Campus at 10am. Mister will be attending a student event impact day with CPCC this coming Friday (4/8/16). Mister meetings are held on Tuesdays on North Campus and Thursdays on South.

Phi Beta Lambda (PBL)

In the month of Match, PBL held the 1st annual Gospel Concert on North Campus. The event was a success, although attendance was scarce. PBL has not held a meeting for the month of April yet but it is planned for April 14th. Over the past couple of weeks, PBL has been taking the time to prepare for the 62nd annual State Leadership Conference that will be held April 7th through the 9th. Students Katelyn Collier, Hanna Brotherton, Ryan Helm, Carolina Shue, Moises Garcia Zapoteco, and Jami Safari will be heading to Charlotte, NC to compete in various competitions from Desktop Publishing to Public Speaking. RCCC PBL holds a very high reputation at these conferences and this year we are striving to hold onto that.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)

PTK officers recently returned from our South Carolina Awareness Banquet where we brought many plaques and awards home for our chapter. We have also been completing our Acts of Kindness for February and March. Officers are preparing for our induction this month. We have had many new members join since the fall and expect to have a great turnout for our induction ceremony. Officers will be attending NerdNation in Washington D.C. this week (April 8, 2016- April 10). We are also planning to recruit new officers for 2016-2017 term.

Prism

At the moment, Emily Faust and myself are still very determined to get PRISM off the ground and make a difference at RCCC. Despite having to cancel our “campus clean up” project because of lack of people to help, we are still moving forward and our next agenda is a service project involving the veterans club, but at this time we still need to work out the details. I have high hopes for the club dedicated to the message of love, peace, and understanding where everyone can have equal rights and happiness.

Radiography

The radiography club is preparing to attend the NCSRT conference this month. Four of our members will be attending thanks to the travel grant we were awarded. We will also be using the remaining funds to attend Kettering to prepare for the radiography registry.

RCEC

The early college student government has been working on our school dance. We finally held the dance Friday, April 1st. Our theme was “April Falls”! We are currently working on ordering extra spirit gear for the school as well as gifts for teacher appreciation and our end-of-the-year ice cream social.

Rotaract

Rotaract has a short month of activity for April. We will be participating in Random Acts of kindness this month on South. We will also be participating in the Oxygen Bar at South as well.

Student Nursing Association (SNA)

I, Matt Biles, was present foe the SGA meeting April 5, 2016. We will be participating at the Leadership Banquet and Random Acts of Kindness this month. I voted on new business and have nothing further to report.

Veterans Club

Last meeting we discussed a change with our campus project due to scheduling issues. We discussed our community project (BINGO night at the VA Hospital). It was originally scheduled for April 28, but the VA Hospital has asked us to change it. Both of these projects will be discussed at our next meeting April 7th. The group meeting worked on a resolution to put forth to SGA to open a campus Veteran’s Center.
