Placement Test Waiver

 

Exemptions from Placement Testing

While assessment and placement is required of all curriculum students, you may be exempt from taking all or part of the NC_DAP placement test. Exemptions or placement test waivers are approved through the Admissions Department with official transcripts or score reports. You may qualify for a placement test waiver for one or more assessment areas (English, reading, math) through the following means:

  1. An unweighted high school GPA equal to or greater than (= or >) 2.6; and completed algebra I, algebra II, geometry, and a fourth math; and graduated within 5 years of your college enrollment. You must submit an official high school transcript to the Admissions Office.
  2. SAT Tests (Suite of Assessments) through College Board
  • For SAT tests taken prior to March 2016 – SAT scores of 500 on Writing OR Critical Reading will exempt the student from the writing, reading, and English sections of the placement test. A score of at least 500 on Mathematics will exempt the student from taking the mathematic sections of the placement test.
  • For SAT tests taken March 2016 to Present – A SAT score of at least 480 on Evidence-Based Reading and Writing will exempt the student from the writing, reading, and English sections of the placement test. A score of at least 530 on Mathematics will exempt the student from taking the mathematics sections of the placement test.
  • Official SAT scores must be received directly from College Board to determine any exemptions. To request your SAT scores be sent directly from College Board, please visit the College Board SAT Score page. The SAT must have been completed with the last five years.
  1. ACT scores of at least 22 on Reading OR 18 on English will exempt the student from the reading and English portions of the placement test. A score of at least a 22 on the Mathematics will exempt the student from taking the mathematics sections of the placement test. Your official scores must be received directly from ACT to determine any exemptions. If you are currently scheduled to take your ACT, the ACT School Code for Rowan-Cabarrus is 3145. If you have previously taken the ACT and need to request your scores be sent directly to Rowan-Cabarrus, please visit the ACT Send Your Scores page. The ACT must have been completed within the past five years.
  2. Have completed transferable college-level coursework in English, math, and computer applications with a grade of ‘C’ or better. Your official college transcript from the awarding college must be received in the Admissions and Records office. It will be evaluated to determine any exemptions.
  3. Have received an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university that demonstrates completion of transferable coursework in English or mathematics. Your official college transcript showing the courses taken and degree awarded must be received in the Admissions and Records Office to determine any exemptions.
  4. Have completed the NC_DAP testing for another college within the previous 5 years.  Official scores must be received directly from the college where testing occurred  in order to determine any exemptions.  You can have those scores sent via mail, email, or fax to the Director of Testing Centers.  If you have completed another form of placement testing within the previous five years, please contact Kathy Hall (kathy.hall@rccc.edu, 704-216-3468), Director of Testing Centers, for review and determination of acceptability of those scores.
