Many of our student veterans have not been in an academic environment for several years. The veterans are understandably nervous about college, taking placement tests and “fitting in” with other students. We believe an intensive orientation with workshops will ease this transition to college and have veterans feeling more prepared to demonstrate their academic skill in English, reading and mathematics in additional to feeling more comfortable on our college campus. This preparation would also give them more confidence as they get used to the campus environment and meet key people in various areas of the college. Feeling welcomed and connected to campus is a major factor in college success.
Almost half of our student population needs some review in Mathematics and English. Our veterans are very similar in their need to review these skills before moving into college level coursework. The VINS will give you the jump start on review and preparation for your success with the college. Success in college is measured by performance on the placement tests, completion of review courses, retention in your college major, GPA, and graduation rates. VINs will help you see college success more quickly and comfortably.
The program will be intensive, strictly structured and give the new students a “connection” to the college and the campus services that are available to assist them with the transition to academic life. We want to have the students feel a sense of engagement with Rowan-Cabarrus.
