Leadership Enrichment and Development (Leadership Program Class)

  • Total Hours:  40 hoursCourse Description:  The purpose of this course is to educate and inspire both nascent and veteran law enforcement officers to become well-rounded and successful police leaders.  It is not designed to teach conventional management skills, but rather to challenge participants to contextually explore both their personal and professional motivations, needs, values, and goals.  The course is intended to provoke critical self-examination and a deeper appreciation of essential leadership principles.  The instructional design includes Socratic teaching methods, guided group discussions, and collaborative class assignments.  Extensive use is made of supportive audio-visual illustrations drawn from a broad spectrum of the arts, sciences, and relevant contemporary events.  The goal of this course is to provide participants with the requisite tools to enrich their leadership experience, and achieve true success and fulfillment as police leaders.  Upon completion, participants should be able to demonstrate an understanding of salient leadership issues and apply this knowledge in the daily conduct of their professional careers. Topic areas include, but are not limited to:  Exploring Personal Truths;  Defining Success;  First Best Destiny;  Essential Leadership Concepts;  The Police Continuum;  Making Tough Decisions; True Professionalism; The Malignancy of Stress;  Challenging Barriers;  Taking Professional Risks;  Leadership Poisons and Dangers;  Building Organizational Pride;  Coping with Critics and Enemies;  Wisdom vs Knowledge;  Temptation and Corruption;  Overcoming Failure;  Learning, Teaching and Mentoring;  The Power of Symbolism and Ceremony;  Case Studies in Leadership; Provenance of Police Customs;  Oaths and Creeds;  Rendering Honors;  Virtues of the Complete Leader;  Making Career Choices;  The Challenge of Balance;  Marriage vs Command;  Spiritual Strength;  Service and Sacrifice;  Perspectives on 21st Century Policing;  Leading with Honor;  The Search for Meaning;  and Leadership LegaciesStudents may register for classes by emailing their requests toralph.adams@rccc.edu
