Course Description:  Within the conduct of the interview, a most neglected and examined phase is the opening.  Impressions that are formed in the first few moments of the interview engagement, are difficult to change and impact directly on the success or failure of subsequent phases of the interview.  In this study, we examine the strategic, interviewer options and requisite skills, that can be employed right from the opening moments that can serve to enhance the possibility of a successful interview outcome.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this training the participant will be able to:

  • Describe the application of phatic communication to the opening of an interview;
  • Delineate an interview opening agenda;
  • Given a video of the opening moments of an interview, provide an assessment of the phatic communication elements omitted in the opening and a recommendation as to what should be added to enhance the possibility of a successful interview outcome.
