Meet Brittany. She’s called herself a resume magician for nearly a decade, but it wasn’t until just over a year ago that she finally felt confident enough to use the title of “business owner.” She’s able to laugh about that now and admits that a business is a business, even if it’s not your full-time job.

Brittany started her journey writing resumes after discovering her love for them in a corporate publishing class in college. While it was years before she started sharing that gift with friends and family, it wasn’t long after that when word began to spread of the results her clients were getting with their resume makeovers.

“I never spent a single dollar in marketing in all my years writing resumes,” said Brittany. “I barely used social media. All my clients were coming from referrals. It was a dream.”

Brittany worked full time in public relations while writing resumes and continued to build her business, later named The Resume House, when she decided to stay home with her three kids for a season. It wasn’t until she went back into the workforce in 2021 that the resume writing started to become overwhelming.

She began to limit her spots each month but was burning out working all day and trying to work more after her kids were in bed. At the end of September 2022, Brittany decided to stop taking new clients.

Then, in October of 2022, after feeling awful every time she told potential clients “no”, an idea fell into her lap. What if she could turn this service-based business into an online course? What if she could teach people exactly how to create a resume that would make them stand out using her process?

That was the point when Brittany reached out to Meg at the Rowan-Cabarrus Small Business Center.

“I knew Meg was the perfect resource to help me bring some formality and structure to this new business idea,” said Brittany. “I had no idea what kind of business structure I should have or even what the basics steps were for starting a business.”

Meg was an incredible sounding board for Brittany as she worked through all her ideas on how to get her business shifted into the online course space. Not only that, contracted a CPA for counseling with Brittany and answer initial financial questions, an invaluable resource.

Did her course sell like gangbusters right away? Well, not exactly.

Brittany launched Resume Roadmap, her online program with instructional videos, worksheets, guides and resume templates, in March of 2023. While she sold well during her weeklong launch special, sales almost immediately fell off and her marketing strategy was just not working.

Her village, that included Meg, her husband and friends, encouraged her throughout the many, many times she considered giving up. Brittany even joined a group coaching program for course creators as her last effort to figure out what was broken and how to fix it.

Thankfully, that investment paid off. In September 2023, Brittany’s dedication to growing her Instagram following hit the jackpot. A reel went viral. And then another. And another. Before the end of November, she crossed the $10,000 sales milestone with her course. Her business Instagram went from 500 Instagram followers in September to over 42,000 by December.

“I could not be more grateful that I decided to keep going,” said Brittany. “All the frustration and failed attempts led me to this place of success today. I owe so much of that to Meg and the Small Business Center. She never gave up on me.”

Brittany served over 100 students in 2023 with her course. Her big audacious goal is to help 350 in 2024. She believes January is going to be her biggest month yet.

“There is nothing like teaching someone how to land interviews with their resume,” Brittany said. “It is a powerful life skill that most people do not have. I am on a mission to change that.”
