Reports:

President’s Report

  • I attended the N4CSGA Central Division meeting with one other SGA member and an advisor on February 20th. We attended several meetings to discuss issues facing students during the pandemic.
  • I attended the Board of Trustees meeting on February 22. Planning is in place for adjusting the fall semester to ensure students can return to campus once COVID restrictions decrease.
  • Graduation will be held on May 21 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway with the ceremony beginning at ten. Eligible students should be checking their college email accounts for updated information and directives.
  • The college will be closed for spring week March 8-12th; all systems will be undergoing maintenance at that time; students will not have access to Blackboard during spring break.
  • Construction updates were given regarding the North Campus Outdoor Learning Center and adjustments in contracts.
  • Student Life has updated its security efforts with Zoom events. If you plan to attend an event, please make sure to come in early enough, as the event will be locked once it has started.
  • TRIO has officially started and is accepting applications. You can find the application at rccc.edu/trio. It is designed to empower underserved students to achieve their goals.
  • A reminder to complete the FAFSA form for the next academic year using your last year’s taxes, as it can be very helpful in receiving federal funds like the Pell Grant.
  • Leadership applications are open for the 2021-22 academic year: SGA President position and Student Ambassadors. Interested students should complete the form and email the completed application to barb.meidl@rccc.edu. Open positions: President, Public Information Officers, Membership Officer, Secretary/Treasurer, and Parliamentarian are open for the spring vote.
  • Also please remember that the Krispy Kreme fundraiser is currently ongoing and the deadline has been extended until April 4th. It is everyone’s responsibility to help with this fundraiser. Please share the fundraiser link with anyone you can.

Vallie Vazquez – N4CSGA Central Division Meeting Report

  • On Saturday, February 20th, I had the opportunity to participate in the N4CSGA Central Division Meeting representing RCCC as a delegate. It was such a great experience seeing other SGA members from colleges near us participate and especially to hear about how they are all handling student life virtually. RCCC received and gave some excellent ideas on future virtual events and how to get students more involved, especially with all the screen fatigue. My favorite part about the event was the breakout sessions when I got to participate in the one called “Nurturing your Mind, Body, and Spirit.” Having these sessions allows students to grow not only as a student but as a person, which is super important in leadership. We also had a conversation about diversity and inclusion after our breakout sessions, a topic that is extremely important for leadership and collaboration. Then, I joined the Central Division Meeting to hear about how others in our division were handling their roles this year and talk about our community service project.

Club Reports:

A.C.E. Technologies
ACE Tech Club Senator attended January SGA Business Mtg on Tuesday, 02 Feb 2021. ACE Tech Club Executive Cmt members met virtually on Thursday, 04 Feb meeting. ACE Tech Club conducted student meetings the week of 2/08/21-2/13/21. ACE Tech Club submitted 4 articles by three authors to be placed in Student Health 101 for a February Spring Lottery Event. ACE Tech Club participated in the Spring Lottery event, Cooking Demonstration scheduled for Thursday, 18 Feb, but was changed to a Scavenger Hunt for the assigned Club’s students. We had at least 4 students, maybe more, submit either the Indoors or Outdoors items. Students voted and approved the spending of $350.00 of Club funds for the purchase of 30 dozen KK doughnuts and 20 KK BOGO cards in support of the SGA Fundraiser. The next ACE Tech Club Executive Committee meeting is Thursday, 11 February 2021. Next ACE Tech Club student meetings will be held week of 15-20 February 2021.

Cosmetology
The Cosmetology Club had Josie Boytek-Ingram come in as a guest speaker. She showed different foiling techniques, color glazes, products, and pricing! We felt that the student body enjoyed this event. We are wanting to find a barber to teach a class. Cos Club is considering offering a treat or reward to students that earn 1500 hours by the end of the semester.

Phi Beta Lambda (PBL)
PBL held its February meeting on the 11th of 2021. The meeting was attended by 22 members and 2 advisors. Speaker was Mr. Chad Nichols. Topics covered during the meeting were:
1. State Competition and Conference to be virtual in April.
2. Dues are due by February 26, 2021
3. Community service project of cards for Trinity Oaks Nursing home due by February 12, 2021, for Valentine’s delivery.
A motion was made by Lesley Lefler and 2nd by Julia Morales to pay the registration fee for the state conference. The next meeting is to be held on March 18, 2021. Meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm.

Student Nurses Association (SNA)
This month, executive members have met to discuss fundraising through T-shirts, club volunteering opportunities, SGA event volunteering, and future meetings. There will be a meeting tomorrow to further discuss these topics. We were able to implement a gift card giveaway that will go on in our next meetings. I and my co-president have posted tips/tricks to help the other nursing students. In addition to that, every Tuesday, a practice NCLEX question is posted to help the students. It came to our attention that the annual nursing conference will be available virtually to seniors, so we are planning toward that.
