Approval of Minutes:

January 14, 2020 – SGA General Business Meeting Minutes

Reports

Since our last meeting, I attended my first Strategic Conversation on Monday 01/27/2020. During this meeting, the articulation agreement with Catawba college was signed allowing for students to have 50 pathways to transfer to Catawba with their associate’s degree. This agreement took effect on Friday 01/31/2020, which means students can begin transferring fall 2020. Qualifying students will receive a merit scholarship of $15,000. Current students can take up to 4 courses for free giving them a head start on their degree. Current students can also use their student ID to take part in their athletic events, band and theater programs. We will be able to attend all events at Catawba college and only pay entrance fees if current Catawba students also have to pay. This is a great opportunity for students to stay local and further their education.
I was also present at the board of trustees meeting on the same day where the articulation agreement with UNCC is underway to provide similar pathways for students who are interested in attending UNCC and participating in their events.
Many of you may not know there is a Solar project underway by Rowan-Cabarrus. The college is a leading public institution in our efforts to be sustainable using solar panels. There are solar panels on two north campus buildings roof and will be adding more panels on the 100 and 200 buildings roof. This will not only decrease carbon footprint long term but decrease energy use.

The Rowan County bond is underway and the focus of the Board in gaining community support. For a family with a home of $140, 000 the approximate tax increase is equivalent to a cup of coffee $3 + a month.
I attended Rowan Helping Ministries with fellow students to participate in the Point-In-Time Homeless count for Rowan County. This number is used to ensure the accuracy of need in our community which reflects funding and governmental assistance. I want to thank Vallie Vasquez and Cameron Marsh for making time to attend with me.

CabTech
Welcoming our new semester with big plans is what we do best. The first plan is to begin our hunger drive preparation in order to get a head start on the “Carolinas Student Hunger Drive” competition. We’ve motioned to have it be the main focus of February. Previously we have won the competition and hope to hold that honor again with enough planning. Preparations for our annual freshman Luau in the May also have begun as it is often our biggest event of the year. It’s one of the biggest traditions of our part of the school and budgets need to be set for food, decorations, and props.

CKEC
We are working toward our next dance, which will take place in late February. Fundraising Committee will be carrying out a movie night to raise money. Communications has done a fantastic job staying active on our social media. They just uploaded their first episode of Student News on YouTube. Social has finished their PO order for everything they need for the dance and will work planning a pep rally. Service has partnered with social to make rules for an upcoming competition. We will also start Penny Wars in the upcoming weeks to raise funds. The funds will be donated to Victory Junction, which we visited last Saturday to volunteer.

Equality Club
On February 7th, the club will have an introductory meeting to talk about various things the club will be doing. This meeting will give order to the club. At the last meeting, officers were voted in.

Fashion Club
We met in January to discuss ordering shirts and possible events in the spring. We will meet again this month to “upgrade” and decorate old clothes. We will also make decisions on what to purchase for our upgrading activity.

LIFT
Living in Faith Together had our first meeting of the new year! We studied foundations. That means we talked about the things that we build our lives on and where our focus should be. We looked to the scripture for guidance. We looked up and studied multiple related verses in the bible. We also planned the next meeting for Feb. 18, with Chinese food.

PBL
We had an officer’s meeting on January 16, 2020, and a regular club meeting on January 23, 2020. Both were on Google Hangout. For our regular club meeting, we had eight members and one advisor. The club had a guest speaker, Mr. Rick Gardner president of the professional division of PBL. We discussed the State Leadership Conference in April. We went over meeting dates for the spring semester and events (lottery and club). We are collecting donations for our community service project. Boxes are Beacons Nest. We are making gift bags for the residents of Trinity Oaks Rehab and Retirement Center in Salisbury. A list of items is on display with the boxes.

PTK
Recently in PTK we have been planning our induction ceremony. We picked our date, location, and we are getting ready to send out spring invitations. We are also in the process of brainstorming spring service project ideas and trying to get ahead on that.

Radiography
The club participated in an MLK event. They have upcoming conferences in Atlanta and Pinehurst.

SNA
SNA meeting on January 29th at 11:15 am. We spoke with the new ADN program (NUR 111) and told them a little bit about the SNA. Told them about what we do, community events that we do, and spoke about our senior trip that happens every year. We then voted on whether to pay Lisa (Vice President) back for the cake she had purchased out of her own funds for the senior luncheon we had back in December. The vote was “yes” to pay her back out of the SNA funds. We spoke about doing another t-shirt fundraiser. We will be using the site “custom ink” to have students design a shirt and students will choose their favorite one and that’s the one that will be in our fundraiser. No dates have been decided for the t-shirt fundraiser.

Tri-Beta (Biology)
Meetings for Tri-Beta have been moved to Wednesday, 9:30 am, the day after SGA meetings. A garden bed project is being discussed. It will most likely be planted sometime in the spring. What will be planted will likely be used to make something for eating. Club meeting tomorrow will discuss participants for the lottery event that was chosen. Research project on nearby moss samples is being discussed. This will most likely be a very hands-on project, as we will be searching for tardigrades.
