SALISBURY, N.C. – Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is introducing the Skilled Pathways Summer Institute, a pre-apprenticeship program designed to provide high school students with hands-on technical training and direct pathways into high-demand careers.
The Skilled Pathways Summer Institute is open to rising high school seniors (Class of 2027), recently graduated seniors (Class of 2026) and eligible Career and College Promise students. Courses will be held from May 26 through July 16 on the College’s North Campus, with pathway-specific schedules designed to provide immersive, hands-on training and industry-recognized credentials, such as OSHA certification, in fields including welding, mechatronics and automotive technology.
“Programs like the Skilled Pathways Summer Institute create meaningful opportunities for high school students to explore career paths while gaining real-world experience,” said Rowan-Cabarrus President Dr. Carol S. Spalding. “This initiative helps connect education with workforce needs and supports students as they prepare for their future.”
Participants will engage in occupation-specific training aligned with industry needs and registered through ApprenticeshipNC, a U.S. Department of Labor intermediary. Students will also have the opportunity to connect with local employers offering apprenticeship programs, including partners such as Daimler Truck North America, Hendrick Automotive Group, Martin Marietta and Mechanical Trades Carolinas.
“This program provides students with a direct connection between education and employment while building valuable technical skills,” said Vice President of Workforce and Technology Dr. Zackary Hubbard. “By working closely with industry partners, we are helping students take meaningful steps toward in-demand careers.”
Participation in the Skilled Pathways Summer Institute includes free tuition, and students who complete the program will receive a $500 stipend through North Carolina Career Launch. Students hired as apprentices within 120 days of program completion may also be eligible for a two-year North Carolina tuition waiver at any North Carolina community college. Participants are responsible for their own transportation, and the registration deadline is Friday, May 8.
