Leadership in Action – Becoming a Self-Aware Leader

Understanding and accurately interpreting your emotions and perceptions are vital becoming  an effective and impacting leader.  This self-awareness is the key to managing, motivating, and mentoring your personnel; with the ultimate goal of making your organization effective for the community while helping your personnel achieve the personal fulfillment that comes with service to their community.  These leaders must concentrate on being open to constant learning and personal development; willing to accept feedback; being honest about your personal strengths and weaknesses; looking for and mitigating “blind spots” in your leadership style; learning to listen without justifying your own point of view; Constantly setting new standards for yourself to improve personally and professionally; and lastly, embracing the “self-awareness” philosophy as a routine practice in your life.

“As one’s power grows, one’s willingness to listen shrinks, either because they think they know more than their employees or because seeking feedback will come at a cost”.-Business professor James O’Toole
