Associate in Arts

Department of Arts & Sciences

The Associate in Arts degree is designed to provide a strong foundation in college-level reading, writing, communication, math and basic computer skills. Students take courses across the humanities and social sciences, which help develop skills in critical thinking, problem solving and communication.

This degree is intended for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree. Courses in the program are approved for transfer through statewide agreements. Students who complete the degree with a C or higher in each course and a minimum 2.0 GPA are eligible to transfer to a public university in North Carolina with junior standing. Many independent colleges and universities in North Carolina also accept this degree for transfer.

The Associate in Arts program is a strong option for students who want to explore majors and career interests before choosing a specific field. It provides a flexible and supportive pathway for students working toward bachelor’s degrees in areas such as education, business, communication, social work, nursing, public administration, the arts and other related fields. Academic advisors work with students to select courses that align with their transfer institution and long-term goals.

The credits earned in an A.A. program at a community college are typically far less expensive than the same credits earned at a four-year higher education institution.

Earning an A.A. degree cuts two years from earning a bachelor’s degree!

An associate degree will provide you the opportunity to explore various disciplines and career fields.

Students will gain useful skills and knowledge that are directly applicable in any workplace such as critical thinking, problem solving and communication.

My aunt attended here and told me about the wonderful opportunities available at RCCC. My favorite part of attending was feeling like I was a part of a family. UNCC is my next stop and I’m glad I prepared myself here first, now I’m ready.
