This 8-hour course prepares the supervisor/administrator in the response to an officer involved shooting. Topics discussed include Supreme Court case law, the body’s response, the psychological changes response to the during and the aftermath, the investigation (internal and external), practices to ensure accurate interviews, body cameras (weaknesses and when to review), media releases, and more.

The US Supreme Court has clearly stated what most prosecutors do not understand. From Tennessee v. Gardner in 1985 to Tahlequah, OK v. Bond in 2021, supervisor/administrators will have legal leverage to protect the officer and educate prosecutors on this issue. Best practices to combat prosecutors who are seeking political gain in shootings rather than seeking the truth will be discussed.

Psychological survival by the officer involved of the aftermath and how the supervisor/administrator enhances this will be discussed in detail. By being trained in the physical, emotional, cognitive and social changes that may occur during the event and/or the aftermath of a shooting, the supervisor will ensure the officer has the tools to survive and thrive following this high stress event.

Best practices for the internal investigation will be instructed including preparation for interviews of the officer involved, as well as when to conduct these interviews. Additional information will be provided in the following areas: the physical evidence usually collected, drug testing of the officer, days off and administrative leave, the report, and the agency’s news/social media response.
