About the Detention Officer Certification Course

The Detention Officer Certification Course (DOCC) should be taken by students seeking certification for employment as a Detention Officer. DOCC was developed to train students to overcome their inexperience and function as Detention Officer upon successful completion.

DOCC is governed by the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. The North Carolina State Detention Officer Certification exam is administered on the last day of the course.

Day and night course options available.

DOCC consists of 175 hours of instruction and is offered throughout the year with both day and night course options.

  • 5-week day course meets Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m.
  • 10-week night course meets Monday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m.-11:00 p.m.

Weekend classes are required occasionally in both the day and night courses; Saturday and Sunday hours vary.
